f course for us Science Guys, it’s not just about the driving, but about what’s coming out the tailpipe. Conventional gas-powered cars are terribly inefficient in two big ways. When they’re idling at a stoplight or alongside a curb, their engines are chugging away burning gas and going nowhere. Then, their engines have to be big enough to allow them to merge onto a highway. The rest of the time, conventional cars are lugging around oversized engines that use more gas than they need. Hybrid technology offers a great fix. At a stoplight, the hybrid’s gas engine simply cuts off. When merging on a highway, the hybrid’s electric motors and gas engine work together to get up to speed more quickly.
